Medical power supplies differ greatly from average, domestic power supply units. Because of their application there are critical demands on medical power supply units for safety and reliability. A report issued by Frost & Sullivan in 2006 estimated that the world power supply market for medical applications would grow from 0million in 2005 to a projected 8.1million in 2012. This is just a fraction of the overall potential power supply market, and as new developments in medical treatments mean more patients can benefit from home care equipment, that forecast may be a little on the low side.
The rise of applications such as CAT scans, MRI devices, blood analysers and patient-monitoring systems for home care are also expanding the uses that medical power supplies can be incorporated into. In addition there are now specific requirements within hospital and medical centre applications that require power supply units that can give high power, reliable and efficient power delivery which are both cost effective and compliant with all legislation.
One of the concerns regarding compliance is that in some instances, end users are unaware that ordinary, commercial power supplies do not necessarily meet the required standard for application in medical equipment. Issues such as component spacing, insulation and leakage current can all cause a power supply to perform below standard, and in a medical situation where the life of a patient may depend on the power supply’s ability to cope with the application, this could prove fatal. The International Electronics Manufacturing Initiative (iEMI) addressed this in 2006 with a project that set out to develop reliability specifications for medical-grade electronic components, including medical power supplies. The ongoing project has so far achieved three objectives:
• Established draft protocol for acceptance testing based on a comprehensive Failure Mode Effects Analysis of failed devices. This protocol is currently being validated using components provided by different suppliers.
• Developed new optical inspection methods to screen components for macroscopic failures during testing. This automated system enables acquisition of large data sets quickly.
• Tracked reliability of parylene coatings (of neural recording electrodes) as a function of local chemistry and identified conditions of use that resulted in significant localized degradation at the probe tip.
It is essential for those who are looking to purchase medical power supplies that they ensure that the product they buy is fully compliant with all legislation that deals with medical equipment. It is critical that lives are not put at risk because of the desire to cut costs by employing unsuitable commercial power supply units that may not be able to cope with the demands put upon them by medical equipment. When choosing medical power supplies, the purchaser should always look for the highest quality product from a reputable supplier. They should also consider the end user – not the hospital, but the patient.

Cooking Up Some Fun With New Kid’s Music Cd: Shake and Bake, Songs About Fitness and Food
Childhood obesity rates are reaching mammoth proportions. Parents, teachers, and medical personal are wondering what steps to take in order to fight the fat. Caroline Figiel and Danny Jones have created a fun children’s music CD, to help children learn to make healthy choices. The United States Department of Agriculture and several state health and school nutrition agencies have already given the children’s music CD a big “thumbs up”.
Noticing that children spend too much time in front of the TV, and video games, Caroline and Danny decided to combine their experiences as parents, educators and entertainers to create a CD to motivate children off the couch and away from the junk food. They focused their efforts on exercise, nutrition, and some good basic health habits by writing the CD for children preschool-3rd grade. The catchy music gets them moving and exercising. The “edutaining” lyrics that introduce these healthy concepts gets them giggling while learning at the same time. Who would think nutrition could be so much fun! On November 22, 1963 in Dallas, Texas, the 35th president of the US, John F. Kennedy became the third president to be assassinated, after William McKinley, John Garfield and Abe Lincoln. He was traveling on an open top Lincoln continental limo with his wife Jackie and the Texas Governor Connally and his wife and was fatally shot on a slow motorcade along Elm Street through Dealey Plaza. Questions abound on the circumstances before, during and after Kennedy was assassinated, among other things:
Why was the presidential limousine fully open in a slow motorcade down a road where the buildings around it had not been properly secured and in a state known to be hostile territory? Either the Secret Service blundered in their responsibility to protect the president or there was something deliberate.
What caused the change in the identification of the rifle used in the assassination from a 7.68 Mauser to a 6.5 Italian Mannliicher Carcano? Was there a change of heart in pointing to a fall guy?
In the 8 mm Zapruder film, Kennedy slumped backward from the fatal shot when the rifle trajectory was supposed to be from behind coming from the 6th floor window of the Texas School Book Depository building. The autopsy showed that a large right rear part of the head had been blown off indicating an exit wound with the obvious conclusion that Kennedy must have been shot in the front with a trajectory level from the ground, not from a height. In addition a second possibly earlier bullet hit the nape and exited on the front neck to cause the president to choke but would not have been fatal. This showed he was shot from two directions at different heights.
Why was the lone suspect Lee Oswald immediately shot to death by Jack Ruby when he could have provided vital information behind the assassination as being the lone suspect, this was the best course to silence any information source that could point elsewhere.
The Warren Commission’s 10-month investigative effort to uncover the truth behind the Kennedy assassination found no persuasive evidence to any conspiracy and that the alleged assassin Oswald acted alone and so was his killer Jack Ruby.
Immediately after the report became public, questions started to bring the findings to disrepute and suspicion of a concerted conspiracy from the CIA, Secret Service and the FBI as well as parties who would benefit from his death like LB Johnson who succeeded him as the 36th president.
In addition, other parties like the Cuban exiles with an axe to grind in the failed Operation Mongoose could have been behind the assassination. Underworld Mafia bosses, teamsters and mobsters as well as foreign government like Cuba and the Soviet Union stood to gain from his death.
The results of commission findings were sealed for 75 years as a policy of the National Archives but were eventually superceded by the Freedom of Information Act of 1966 and the JFK records act of 1992. Several pieces of the documentation had been lost or missing; Oswald’s military file destroyed in 1973 and the Kennedy autopsy photos and X-rays were outside of the Warren Commission and deeded separately under restricted conditions to the National Archives in 1966. With so many question unanswered, the conspiracy theories remain as strong as ever.
